Don’t bother trying to adjust your television set: That incredibly shrill, high-pitched sound is just countless teenyboppers going berserk over the prospect of ABC’s new competition Boy Band. The 10-episode series will set out to create the next all-male supergroup, with the top five contestants landing a Hollywood Records contract and, presumably, a lifetime supply of Axe body spray. Guiding them on the path to fame and fortune: Nick Carter. The Backstreet Boy, along with Emma Bunton of the Spice Girls and host Rita Ora, will share hard-won wisdom on how to achieve perfect harmony, on stage and off. Here, Carter sings like a canary.

You and Emma are Boy Band’s designated “architects.” What does that mean, exactly?
We’re responsible for choosing the singers and then trying to find the best combinations of voices. Each week, we’ll put two people up for elimination, and America votes. In a lot of ways, we are going to be mentors—we want to form a group that lasts. It’s so awesome getting to do this with Emma because there are so many parallels between our careers. She’s Baby Spice, and I’m Baby Backstreet!

How will you determine if somebody has the right stuff to succeed at this?
It’s definitely about the vocals first, and then everything else can be worked on. When my band started out, we weren’t the greatest dancers at all. We had to practice and grind it out. And in terms of the group dynamic, chemistry will make or break you—the right personalities molding together as a team. I’m gonna get to the bottom of these guys’ true intentions!

Any advice for the winning crew on staying in sync?
This is a relationship—100 percent—and it’s not going to be easy. The Backstreet Boys have been together for 24 years, and we are married to each other. Communicate, share your feelings, be a family unit—and hold on tight for the ride of your life!

ABC has brought together some of the greatest pop influencers of the past 20 years in hopes of creating the next chart-topping boy band via a new reality show.

Boy Band unites Backstreet Boy Nick Carter, Spice Girl Emma Bunton and Justin Timberlake’s most frequent collaborator Timbaland on Thursday, June 22 to try and find the next great pop act of the 2000s. Instead of judges, the threesome are called “architects” and will coach a set of aspiring young male singers into the team players they need to be to hopefully join the ranks of the pop groups of yesteryear. The proceedings will be hosted by recording artist and actress Rita Ora.

Each of the architects are approaching the competition from various areas of expertise. Carter, of course, is one fifth of one the most successful boy bands of all time. The Backstreet Boys, unlike most of their pop contemporaries, are still touring and performing together. Bunton, better known to her fans as Baby Spice, toured the world with the Spice Girls, redefining “Girl Power” and smashing records left and right. Timbaland’s presence could be felt more behind the scenes. He helped craft Aaliyah’s career and turned Justin Timberlake from boy band member to a pop icon in his own right.

TVGuide.com got the opportunity to talk to all three architects about why they joined Boy Band, what it takes to make a successful group in 2017 and why this show is what everyone needs to be watching this summer.

What brought you to the show?

Nick Carter: For me, I was approached by the producers and also ABC. They basically had the idea of the show Boy Band and they said, “We were thinking about these different guys in groups right now that are active in a boy band. We really think that you could offer something to the show because of your experience and whatever.” Obviously, I had done some stuff before with ABC with Dancing with the Stars and knew the whole family. I obviously heard about Timbaland’s involvement, Emma’s involvement and the concept itself was — I felt like they really wanted to get it right this time.

Following a successful stint on Dancing With the Stars, Nick Carter is gearing up to appear on another aptly-titled ABC reality competition: Boy Band!

The youngest Backstreet Boy will be one of three architects trying to “create the next great music sensation, live,” alongside former Spice Girl Emma Bunton and Grammy Award-winning producer and artist Timbaland.

Ahead of Boy Band‘s premiere this week, we caught up with Carter to chat about the exciting new competition, the secret to having a lasting pop group and the Backstreet Boys’ forthcoming return to Las Vegas!

How did you get involved with Boy Band?
ABC approached me with the idea of this show. The producers who came to me said they were thinking of a new concept with the three architects and a mentor. When they approached me, they said, “Listen, we tried to think about people who could possibly be an architect on this show. We feel that you really could contribute in a lot of ways because you are in a boy band and we can’t really think of anybody else who is literally living in a boy band and have the knowledge and experience that you do.”

After hearing that, I just couldn’t turn it down. I just wanted to be involved because it just seemed like it could be so much fun. And after 24 years of doing this, I feel as if I have a lot to say and I have a lot to offer, but I haven’t really had the opportunity to share this knowledge yet. So I felt like this could be a great opportunity with this show. ABC is just really behind it and they want to get it right. You know there have been other networks that have tried to do something with boy bands, but it hasn’t really worked. This time around with the cast, with the chemistry that the judges have, that we all have going on right now, it’s real… It’s a real thing. We care about what happens to these guys, these young kids and we care about their future. Long story short, I hopefully can offer a lot about being in a boy band.
