For a brief second—while suspended in a giant, illuminated, rotating box during the opening moments of the Backstreet Boys’ Las Vegas residency—Nick Carter felt like he had stepped straight back into 1999.

Inside Planet Hollywood’s packed AXIS Theater, 4,600 shrieking fans awaited smash hits like “I Want It That Way” and “Larger Than Life” during a production spectacle reminiscent of the group’s dazzling early tours. Outside the venue doors, everything from slot machines to billboards were adorned with images of the band.

“There was definitely a moment standing up in those boxes and turning around towards the audience that I had a flashback,” says Carter, during an exclusive interview with MarieClaire.com. “I think we’re close to what that was again…and maybe in some ways, better now.”

The Grammy-nominated group never actually went away (they’ve been consistently producing albums for almost 24 years), but the unavoidable and endless “Backstreet’s Back, Alright!” headlines have never been more relevant. As well as being the fastest-selling residency in Las Vegas history, the AXIS Theater had to open up balcony seats for the first time ever just to house the massive “Backstreet Army”—with fans flying in from Spain, Belgium, Japan, and New Zealand for the group’s 26-date run. Meanwhile, BSB is getting radio play thanks to their new collaborative single with Florida Georgia Line, making casual appearances on The Bachelor, and landing 6-page spreads in magazines they haven’t frequented so predominantly since their heyday.

But transitioning from chart-topping nineties heartthrobs to 2017’s hottest new act on the Strip isn’t just a random stroke of luck. Reignited interest in the group coincides with a changing tourist profile in Las Vegas and most significantly, society’s new obsession with nostalgia. “Maybe I’m just biased, but I feel like the late nineties and early 2000s was a really great time in everyone’s life,” reflects Carter. “It was a feel-good time and we really represented that. Britney, J.Lo, and *NSYNC were part of it too. Musically, it was unlike any other time in history.”

Backstreet’s Back! Backstreet Boys Notch First Billboard Hot 100 Hit Since 2007

Backstreet Boys return to the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time since 2007, as Florida Georgia Line’s “God, Your Mama, And Me,” featuring the boy band, debuts at No. 92 on the chart (dated March 18).

Backstreet Boys had last appeared on the Hot 100 with “Inconsolable,” which reached No. 86 in September 2007. The new collab is BSB’s 17th Hot 100 hit (and first in a featured role). The group has tallied six top 10s, led by its highest-charting, No. 2-peaking 1997 breakthrough smash “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart).”

Streaming Gainer, following the Feb. 20 arrival of its official video, which stars both FGL and BSB. The collab enters Country Streaming Songs at No. 15, up 31 percent to 2.8 million U.S. streams in the week ending March 2, according to Nielsen Music. It also pushes 6-5 on Country Digital Song Sales (20,000 downloads sold, up 27 percent) and 34-31 on Country Airplay (6.5 million in audience, up 14 percent).

Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley remembers seeing Backstreet Boys in concert in 1998. “It was nuts,” he recently told Billboard. “People were just screaming, hooting and hollering all around.”

“To have the Backstreet Boys featured on [“God”] was something we kind of envisioned in the studio while recording it,” the duo’s Tyler Hubbard added. “To have that come to fruition was amazing. It really, really took that song to the next level.”

Said Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson, “I’m a father of two boys, so I like how the song could have a double meaning. You could be talking about your children, or your spouse, or your love interest. I think it’s poetic, and it’s got a great melody.”

You can forgive the Backstreet Boys if they’re waxing a little nostalgic. You’d catch a case of the throwbacks too if you were kicking off a retrospective residency in Las Vegas. This month, the best-selling boy band of all time has set up shop at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino’s AXIS theatre (also home to residency acts Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez) with a pop spectacle that spans the group’s almighty career. With 24 years’ worth of hits to choose from, the Backstreet Boys are certain to make the Larger Than Life show one to remember.

As the group was unwinding after their opening night performance last week, ELLE.com sat down with them to draw out war stories from the apex of their fame in the ’90s and the secrets of what’s kept them going. And, boy, did they deliver. (Younger, newer male pop acts: please take note.) Read on for the secrets and scandals they shared—and take a peek at our exclusive, intimate photos.

The times may change, but the costume changes stay the same

AJ McLean: I had to pull my zipper on stage last night. It was great. My mom just wrote, “Big show. Huge success. And I saw you had to pull up your fly on stage. Some things never change.” That’s my mom. God love her.

ELLE.com: That can’t be the first time that’s ever happened.

AJ: My fly’s been down quite a lot. I don’t know why.

Nick Carter: On purpose.

Kevin Richardson: I ripped the ass of my pants in Vegas when we were playing the MGM at the end of the first leg of the In a World Like This tour.
