Nick Carter, best known as a member of the Backstreet Boys, is headed to Raleigh for one night only at The Ritz.

We chatted with him about the Raleigh show, the upcoming album and fatherhood.

RM: What was the inspiration behind releasing a new solo album?

NC: The inspiration behind ‘All American’ came from the fact that I really love doing solo stuff. It gives me a chance to do things I don’t get to do with the boys. I love rock music and playing guitar onstage, which I incorporate into my solo music. We (the Backstreet Boys) give each other the freedom to do our thing, which in turn makes the bond we have stronger.

RM: Will you perform any Backstreet Boys at The Ritz show in Raleigh?

NC: Absolutely, I couldn’t leave out performing some of my favorites. Old stuff, new stuff… you can expect to hear a lot.

RM: What’s one thing you do in your shows that will surprise fans?

NC: I’ve been hearing that people are surprised at how long my set is. I wanted to include a lot of material, and I’ve been changing things up – so no show is exactly the same.

Twenty years since the release of the Backstreet Boys’ self-titled album, the boy band’s frontman Nick Carter is continuing his music career with the November release of his third solo album, All American, and a monthlong tour.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 36-year-old explained that with his solo music, he tries to “step out of the box and do stuff I don’t get to do with the boys,” and that he wanted his new album “to be fun, rock-infused and try some new things while going back to my roots.”

Carter will begin his tour on Feb. 26 and perform across the U.S. during the month of March, performing solo songs and classic Backstreet Boys hits for fans, including his new single “19 in 99,” which features fellow band mate A.J. McLean in the music video. “I wanted to bring in the fact that “I Want It That Way” was huge in 1999,” Carter says of the cameo. “He makes an awesome pizza guy, doesn’t he?

The musician also revealed that a new Backstreet Boys album is in the works and that fans might be able to expect more cameos from his fellow band members in the future: “I feel like we’re going to have to make that happen soon.”

The Hollywood Reporter: “19 in 99” gives nod to the 90s. Tell us about the concept of the video and how you came up with it.

Nick Carter: It’s a really fun video that came from the idea that we all get nostalgic and wish we could go back in time. 1999 was a big year for [Backstreet Boys] and I wanted to try and take the viewers back to ’99 with me.

Nick Carter – “19 in 99”: I can’t wait to hit the road on my All American Tour, and I’m most excited to perform this song for my fans. It has a great feeling of nostalgia that I can’t wait to bring to the stage.

Michael Jackson – “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”: Nothing better than the true king of pop. Hands down one of his best songs. Never gets old.

2Pac – “California Love”: How can you remember the 90’s without mentioning 2Pac? I had to give him a shout out in “19 in 99.”

Zayn Malik – “Pillowtalk”: The perfect transition from a boy band. Great song!

Nirvana – “Come As You Are”: One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands. Still packs a punch years later.
