CBS Radio’s forth annual We Can Survive concert, which took place Saturday night (October 22), was a star-studded affair, with a lineup that included Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande, Pitbull, OneRepublic, Meghan Trainor, G-Eazy and Charlie Puth.

But the crowd went crazy, when, with no introduction, surprise performers the Backstreet Boys took the stage after Grande’s set. With no warning, they appeared onstage, performing “Backstreet’s Back,” followed by “Incomplete.” During the later song, the monitors showed a male fan near the stage, crying with joy.

Singer Howie Dorough told the crowd that the boy band were very proud to be there, before informing the audience that they were about to hit memory lane, going into “As Long As You Love Me,” and flawlessly busting out the old-school dance moves.

“We’ve Got It Going On” was next, followed by a massive singalong for “I Want It That Way”; the music video for the song played behind them on the screen, reminding the audience that the BSB’s hits have withstood the test of time and so have the guys themselves.

They wrapped up with “Larger Than Life,” which, as they pointed out, also happens to be the name of their Las Vegas residency, kicking off in 2017.

What’s the soundtrack of your youth? In ELLE.com’s new column, Best Song Ever, we revisit the tunes that made us who we are. In today’s installment, the immortal “I Want It That Way” by The Backstreet Boys.

When Nick Carter, A.J. McLean, and Kevin Richardson—a.k.a. three-fifths of The Backstreet Boys—get on the phone to me, they’re speaking, inexplicably, in Scottish accents. But I don’t care! They’re THE BACKSTREET BOYS. They could curse me in Dothraki and I’d be down with it.

They’re not going to do that, though, because they’re not jerks. After the guys are done with their Outlander role play, we settle down to business. The trio are on the press rounds for their collaboration with Chex Mix: Snackstreet’s Back, a music video spoof featuring all the ’90s graphics, gratuitous costume changes, and throwback feels you could want.

But what we’re really here to talk about is “I Want It That Way.”

The 1999 song is such a classic that when I went to get a coffee this morning, it was playing in the cafe. Although “I Want It That Way” is 17 years old, it’s still on regular rotation everywhere from karaoke bars to fashion weeks—and still makes news headlines.

We chatted with Nick, A.J., and Kevin about their signature ballad. Here, they (sort of) answer all our questions about “I Want It That Way” and how it came to be.

Nick doesn’t remember the first time he heard the song.

That’s what he told me. To be fair, I don’t either, and I’ve listened to it 50,000 times.

Backstreet’s back! The Backstreet Boys have announced an 18-date Las Vegas residency at The AXIS at Planet Hollywood.

To celebrate, the world’s most successful boy band of ALL TIME performed at the Honda Stage at the iHeartRadio Theater in Los Angeles. We asked them their favorite BSB songs ever and also to tell us whyyyyy.

1. “All I Have To Give”
Howie: It was one of the first Backstreet Boys songs that we all collectively sang on.

2. “Spanish Eyes”
Howie: It was the first song dedicated to our Spanish fans and I’m Spanish so I’m partial to that.

3. “Siberia”
Brian: It’s very haunting. It’s a super sad love song and I’m a sappy type of person.
AJ: I picked this as well as Brian did, we both love that song. It’s such an ominous record. It’s really haunting. Wish it was a single but sadly it was not. It’s also an awesome song to perform live.

4. “Get Another Boyfriend”
AJ: This is a song I’ve wanted to put back into our show since we did it live during the Black & Blue tour and finally the fellas let me have my wish! We have it back in our show now, but as an acoustic version. So it’s pretty freaking cool.

5. “If You Want It To Be Good Girl (Get Yourself A Bad Boy)”
Nick: It’s a tongue twister. The reason I picked it is because the other guys hate it.
